The Osteopathic Difference

In Nature there is unity within diversity. There appears to be an integrative force, an invisible intelligence, that drives, directs and energizes all life. This integrative force, sometimes called chi in Eastern medicine, has no direct equivalent in Western medicine. HOWEVER, Osteopathic physicians have a long history of recognizing and working with this primary regulatory mechanism of the body, thereby achieving maximal health and wellness.

This invisible intelligence flows through the body’s tissues – through its fluids and its electro-magnetic fields alike. Any physical, biochemical or bio-electric blockages along these body communication systems, impedes the propagation of information, of nervous impulses, blood flow, lymphatic drainage, organ regulation and hormone production.

If an organ, or the nerve that gives it its innervation is compressed, or damaged, the normal physiology of the nerve and the end organ is disrupted, and function is lost.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a gentle, safe, non-invasive means of re-establishing normal structure, (anatomy) and function (physiology). A bonus is that many other health issues also improve and resolve as the entire body is being properly aligned and fine-tuned, perhaps for the first time.

“As a twig is bent, so she will grow,” is a time-honored aphorism of this 150 year old medical profession and its philosophy, called Osteopathy.

Structure affects function, and function affects structure.
